About Cia  |   Therapeutic Disclosure Statement

Cia Robles Flodin has worked as a Mental Health Counselor since 1983. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Applied Psychology from Eastern Washington University and a Master of Education degree specializing in Counseling Psychology from Heritage College. She works with individuals, families, and groups with Eating Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Mood Disorders. Cia developed and facilitated the Tri-Cities Eating Disorder Task Force. She has expertise working with step families and children of divorce.  She developed the court ordered parenting seminar for divorcing parents "Do it for the Kids".

Cia works with individuals, couples, families, and groups in her private practice. She often works as a team member when treating clients. This would include the client's family physician, psychiatrist, school counselor, dietitian, social services staff and other health care workers. Her counseling experience includes work in adult and adolescent psychiatric in-patient units as well as outpatient counseling agencies. She has experience working as a Medical Social Worker for Hospice. Cia has traveled throughout Washington State to facilitate groups and provide workshops. She has lectured in the areas of Eating Disorders, Anger Management, Step-Parenting, Domestic Violence, Abuse, Trauma, and Family & Divorce Mediation.

Her theoretical orientation combines cognitive-behavioral, EMDR, solution focused therapy, and systemic approaches. She strives to establish a rapport that allows a trusting and caring relationship to develop with her clients. This provides an environment where the person will feel safe and comfortable disclosing issues or difficulties they may be experiencing.

Cia teaches clients how to identify situations that trigger emotional responses that in turn elicit unhealthy coping behaviors. As the client becomes increasingly aware of these triggers, they are able to slow their thought process that produces the "thinking error." This allows the client to re-frame their thinking by discerning information from the flashback of emotions. The client can then utilize logical thought processes and substitute these reactions with healthy coping behaviors. Clients are encouraged to utilize the tools they learn in therapy with emphasis on personal responsibility and growth.

While working with families, Cia will use a system approach where the identified client comes into therapy manifesting the symptoms of a bigger problem within the family. Her role as therapist is to help families identify negative patterns of interacting. Many times, family members will reenact situations they experienced as a child to make sense of it. Therapy provides family members the opportunity to practice healthy communication and alternatives to old behaviors. General parenting techniques and behavioral theories are also discussed.
